Jonabel huavas - “Layers of Care” (2025) watercolor, gouache, and acrylic on paper 76 x 57 cm I was thinking about notions of care and reciprocity between the body and nature while I was making this painting. I was remembering the stories of how the leaves of guava and malunggay healed my grandmother and mother after giving birth. I was discovering stories from bagobo folklore about the diety, Mebuyan, who nourishes the dead souls of children with milk coming from her breast-covered body. The body is bending, is it going back to the land or is emerging from the ground? Is she whispering to the ground or is she listening to the stories of the land? The female body is enveloped by layers of folklore and plants that have graciously shared us their magic and cure. But with these gifts, comes the responsibility to reciprocate. We continue to tell their stories, their magic and pass them on to other kins.

Anne-Sophie CHIOMA Opara - Marsha P. Johnson - 2019 This illustration is a tribute to Marsha P. Johnson, not just as an icon, but as a force of resistance. Marsha embodied punk before it even had a name, not just in style, but in rebellion, survival, DIY energy, and refusing to fit in. Long before labels like punk or intersectional feminism were widely used, she was already living them. She existed unapologetically in a world that tried to erase her, a Black trans woman, creating her own visibility, her own beauty, her own space. With her “pay it no mind” attitude, she rejected judgment and survival became a form of protest. Her style, often made from found objects, reflected a DIY spirit that feels deeply punk. But more than that, it was her actions, standing up against police violence during the Stonewall uprising, caring for homeless queer youth, fighting for those pushed furthest to the margins, that defined her. Her feminism was not about fitting in, but about making sure no one was left behind.

Sabine Van Eynde - Red Zebra - Een zestal jaren geleden lanceerde Peter Slabbynck van Red Zebra een oproep om een bestaande LP-hoes te herwerken. Iedereen, jong en oud, kon deelnemen met een collage of een andere techniek. Hij deelde bovendien ook blanco LP-hoezen uit op de markt van Brugge. Er was een deadline om de werken binnen te brengen met de bedoeling een selectie te maken en er zou een tentoonstelling volgen. Omdat glas niet echt binnen de selectiecriteria paste, heb ik hem toen aangeschreven met de vraag of ik toch mocht deelnemen buiten selectie. Ik vond het een boeiend onderwerp en laat me graag uitdagen door zulke calls. Ze verruimen mijn blik en zetten me aan om anders naar een onderwerp te kijken. Peter reageerde meteen enthousiast en ik ging van start. Voor mijn werk koos ik uiteindelijk de cover van Innocent People van Red Zebra, uitgevoerd in de Tiffany techniek. Door de coronaperiode is het hele project uiteindelijk stilgevallen en is de geplande tentoonstelling nooit doorgegaan.
